Kanpur, October 23, 2008; Jagran Prakashan Limited (JPL) (BSE SCRIP ID: 532705; NSE SYMBOL: JAGRAN), publishers of ‘Dainik Jagran’, India’s largest read newspaper (Source: IRS), has reported revenues of Rs. 214.10 crores for Q2FY09, an increase of 18.36 % over the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The net profit was at Rs 22.70 crores and the EPS for the quarter was at Rs 0.75, an increase of 3.15% over Q2 of FY 2008

Advertising revenues from the publishing business have registered a robust growth of 23.24% and circulation revenues also grew by 1.96%. Increase in advertisement revenue was driven by increase in total space sold, higher rate and increase in circulation revenue was mainly driven by increase in circulation.

In Q2 FY09, revenue from non-publishing activities (out of home advertising, event management and SMS) was Rs. 13.36 crores as against Rs. 12.26 crores in Q2 FY 08, an increase of about 9% over corresponding quarter.

During the quarter, two more editions of City Plus were launched at Banglore and Greater Noida, taking total number of editions of City Plus to 12 and J9, the mobile VAS division of Jagran Prakashan has launched Khojle, a classified website portal which can also be accessed through mobile phones.

Commenting on the performance of the company for the quarter ended 30th September 2008, Mr. Mahendra Mohan Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, JPL said, “This was one of the most challenging quarters in the recent past for the business in general and newspaper industry in particular. Disturbed macro economic conditions coupled with negative sentiments had an adverse impact on national advertising and price of newsprint also peaked in this quarter. However, steps taken to minimize the impact of increasing newsprint cost and keep under control other costs, continued thrust on local advertising and efficient management of funds helped company improve upon performance of corresponding quarter of the last fiscal.

Notwithstanding the current economic scenario, I have tremendous faith in Indian economy and I continue to be bullish on the newspaper industry. After some gap, I can see a few positives viz. proactive approach of government to improve liquidity and soften high interest rates, falling inflation, drop in prices of commodity and crude and consumer spending remaining intact, which cumulatively are capable of once again lifting the morale and Indian economy.

With the fall in prices of domestic newsprint from current quarter and on the expectations of more conducive economic environment, I expect a better second half for the company. “
